Moderate consumption of carbohydrates in the diet lengthens life

The moderate consumption of carbohydrates favors a healthier and longer life, according to a study published in the British magazine. The research, led by cardiovascular medicine specialist Sara Seidelmann of Brigham and Women's Hospital (United States), revealed that diets that substitute carbohydrates for proteins or fats should be avoided because of their possible link to "shorter life cycles."

"Consuming carbohydrates in moderation seems to be optimal for health and to have a longer life ," according to experts.

The study also highlighted that the replacement of this type of food by beef, lamb, pork, chicken or cheese is related to higher mortality rates , while a diet rich in vegetable proteins (such as vegetables, legumes or nuts) decreases the risk of mortality.

"Low-carbohydrate diets, which replace them with protein or fat, are gaining popularity as a healthy way to lose weight, " said Seidelmann. "However, our data suggest that these could be associated with a shorter life and should not be recommended," the researcher added.

However, the specialist in cardiovascular medicine clarified that, "if a person decides to start a diet of these characteristics, at least it should include more vegetable proteins , which promote healthy aging."

The authors analyzed the dietary habits of 15,428 adults aged 45 to 64 from different socioeconomic backgrounds and from four American communities. During a 25-year follow-up, 6,283 of the participants died.

The experts observed a relationship between low carbohydrate intake and life expectancy.

They observed a low life expectancy for those who carried out diets low in carbohydrates (less than 40% of calories) or high (more than 70%), and high for those who opted for moderate consumption (between 50 and 55% of calories).

Likewise, the researchers estimated that, after 50 years, the average life expectancy was 33 additional years for the group with a moderate intake of carbohydrates -four years more than those with very low carbohydrate consumption and one year more than those with high consumption-.

Despite this, from the study they clarified that, since the diets were only measured at the beginning of the trial and then six years later, the dietary patterns could vary, which affects the level of reliability of the results.
